KONY 2012

If for someone reason you have been living in a box the past 48 hours (or simply have not used any social media), please check out the video above. Its about stopping rebel leader Joseph Kony, who kidnaps children in Africa. He gives the boys guns and they become apart of his army. The girls become sex slaves. He has abducted 1000s of children, and although he has moved out of Uganda this man is still abducting children and adding to his growing army. I watched the original Invisible Children video in high school, I remember it so vividly. I was so taken back and couldn't believe it. Unfortunately, I never really felt compelled to do anything because I didn't know what to do. But I think EVERYONE can watch this video and feel moved to do something. Especially since the video gives us little ways on how we can help.  Now that you guys have seen the video, I hope you also share it with as many others as possible. The great thing about the world now! Through our blogs we can share so much so easily we others, we are all connected even if its not completely physical. Also consider checking out the website and donating to tri and ordering an action kit. Lets make this happen this year!

A day without shoes: Don't get cold feet!

I'm sure you ladies have all heard (and own a pair) of TOMS shoes. Not only are they super cute, fashionable, and very comfortable, but the company was built on a good cause. Every pair of shoes bought, the company donates a pair of shoes to a child in need. In case you didn't know, millions of children around the world grow up without shoes with leaves them at risk for serious disease and infection. Its hard to imagine, as I know I take my shoes for granted, and I am as what you would call a self-proclaimed shoe addict. I have two pairs of TOMS shoes in my collection. And I wear the hell out of my black TOMS because they match with everything and I need to wear closed-toe shoes for my labs.

Well  today, April 5th I will participating in A day without Shoes. I am going a day without shoes not only to see what its like but to most importantly raise awareness. I encourage (or challenge) everyone to participate, as this is for a great cause. I'm sure I'm going to be getting lots of stares as I walk around campus tomorrow, but thats the point! Even if you have requirements where you have to wear shoes I challenge you to go any time period possible or even do an activity without shoes. If you can't participate you should still check out the TOMS website and invest in a pair of shoes as its for a good cause. I picked out some of my favorite styles:

Its the season of giving

Its that time of the year again. I love the fabulous feelings that come with christmas time and everything about it. The decorations, the cold weather, the food, every christmas song and movie that plays, you name it--I love it! Unfortunately, its hard to get caught up in everything that comes with christmas. And we often don't take a step back to realize that THERE ARE many people out there that are a lot less fortunate, and need help in some way or form. I'm planning on donating some of the money I make with my next paycheck to an organization or two, and I hope you guys will do the same. Here are a few ways you can give back this season. You will make the biggest difference in someone's life and you'll feel amazing in doing so.

1. American Red Cross.  I know when most people think about the red cross they think about donating blood. But the great thing about the red cross is that there are so many ways and various things you can to do help. The cool thing is that if you go online the red cross has a "holiday catalog" that you can pick through and see how you would like to donate your money. It doesn't take a lot to help!  For example, you can donate money towards buying soldiers phone cards ($20) or providing a hot meal for someone ($20).  I personally, plan on donating $18.00 towards buying a blanket.

2. Embrace Global. Did you know that  450 pre-mature babies worldwide die each hour, and one of the main reasons is hypothermia? Embrace global is a charitable organization that is fighting to combat this problem through their 'infant warmer'. By 2013 they hope to save the lives of over 100,000 babies and prevent serious illness in 800,000.  They also hope that this creates an effect in which GDP increases, health care costs are lowered, and ultimately reduced population growth. Any donation amount is accepted!

3. Toys for Tot. I think everyone has heard of this. The best thing are that there are participating cities all over the country, and lots of drop-off locations all over various cities. Its easy to buy a toy, and you will really make a child's future.

4. Locally. There are plenty of places locally that you can volunteer at. Soup kitchens, homless shelters, etc. You can donate your time which is always greatly appreciated and you will make the biggest difference in someone's life this season.
